Upcycled Kids Oven

Last year when my mom visited, we had fun searching through the "junk" people left out for bulk item trash pick up day. Normally the Czech and Polish folks nearby beat us to the good stuff, but sometimes we get lucky. I'm still psyched about finding this slide last fall. One of the items my mom brought home was this little side table. We were planning on painting it, but then I didn't know what I'd use it for or where to put it.

About a month ago, Cooper was having a lot of fun playing restaurant and grocery store owner in the play room with our Melissa and Doug food items and Kiwi Crate grocery apron. I've been wanting a little kitchen for Lily and Cooper for a while, but am not a fan of the plastic ones they sell, and the wooden ones everywhere are pretty pricey.  Alas! Cooper and I decided to turn this little table into an oven! He helped me paint it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Country Grey and even painted in the black burners with me. I wanted to use chalkboard paint for the black burners, but didn't have enough. Oh well. Maybe I can redo it later. Here is what it looks like now!

I added the knobs and oven door handle and a little shelf on the side. The hanger I used is bent, thus we have a leaning sideboard. I'll have to fix that. Planning on adding a refrigerator next! I have another old pine table that I think will work perfectly, so more to come! I was going to wait and post the whole handmade kitchen, but I'm just not patient enough.

The cute grocery cart and more food items are from my mom for Lily's birthday. She loves it as much as Cooper, taking everything out of the oven and banging the pots and pans as loud as she can.

  3. This is FANTASTIC! And so much cuter than any of the ones I've seen available to buy (including the Melissa & Doug one we have in our play room)
