Upcycled Kids Oven

Last year when my mom visited, we had fun searching through the "junk" people left out for bulk item trash pick up day. Normally the Czech and Polish folks nearby beat us to the good stuff, but sometimes we get lucky. I'm still psyched about finding this slide last fall. One of the items my mom brought home was this little side table. We were planning on painting it, but then I didn't know what I'd use it for or where to put it.

About a month ago, Cooper was having a lot of fun playing restaurant and grocery store owner in the play room with our Melissa and Doug food items and Kiwi Crate grocery apron. I've been wanting a little kitchen for Lily and Cooper for a while, but am not a fan of the plastic ones they sell, and the wooden ones everywhere are pretty pricey.  Alas! Cooper and I decided to turn this little table into an oven! He helped me paint it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Country Grey and even painted in the black burners with me. I wanted to use chalkboard paint for the black burners, but didn't have enough. Oh well. Maybe I can redo it later. Here is what it looks like now!

I added the knobs and oven door handle and a little shelf on the side. The hanger I used is bent, thus we have a leaning sideboard. I'll have to fix that. Planning on adding a refrigerator next! I have another old pine table that I think will work perfectly, so more to come! I was going to wait and post the whole handmade kitchen, but I'm just not patient enough.

The cute grocery cart and more food items are from my mom for Lily's birthday. She loves it as much as Cooper, taking everything out of the oven and banging the pots and pans as loud as she can.

Last Night

One of my all time favorite books as a child was  Robert Munsch's "Love you Forever". I read it to Cooper when he was little, but hadn't pulled it out in a very long time. Last night, Frank was out climbing so I put the kids to bed alone. I picked out my favorite books to ready to Cooper, and started with this one.

I always like to sing the part "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, and as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be" and thought Cooper might like that part too.

About halfway through the book, he was squirming. He asked me to skip that part... When the mommy is being rocked by the boy all grown up at the end, Cooper just lost it. He started wailing to close the book. Tears started rolling down his chubby cheeks.

I hugged him and comforted him and asked him why he was so upset. "Mommy, I don't want you to get old!"

Broke my heart. It took everything I had to hold back my tears.I kissed him and told him I am still very young and have a long time to get old and proceeded to grab some very silly books to read instead.

Phew... that boy. So dear. Just want to hug em up right now. I don't want to get old either precious boy.

Happy Birthday Lily Kate!

My precious Lily turned 1 this week. Sigh... where does the time go. She is such a big girl now! She stared at the cake for a minute, then once papa got the fork in the mouth, she wouldn't stop. She gobbled up her whole piece and smeared quite a bit in her hair and face of course. I was hoping she would.

We celebrated with my parents and Frank's parents too via Skype! Gotta love technology. We did the same for Cooper's birthday, so they could see the kids blow out the candles and open gifts.

I feel a little guilty for not making more of a party for Lily, like we did for Cooper, but then again, there are many more parties to come for her, and this one was special because she had the grandparents with her.

Lily is walking all over now. She only can take about 8-15 steps before falling, but she's getting there. Here come the bumps and bruises too this means. I've also had to bust out the baby gates. She is all about the steps right now, and taking everything out of my cupboards and off the shelves.

I sure do love this age. She is nothing but smiles this girl. And she sleeps. Yes, Hallelujah, I have a child that loves to sleep. Still wondering if its genetics or parenting differences. Guess we'll never know for certain. I sure am thankful for this baby doll. She has my heart.

Don't touch my fork papa.

Before dinner she was getting into the Kleenex box. Check out those teeth!

California Trip

I've decided I need to support my amazing little sister by blogging more. If she can post amazing things nearly daily, I can at least post something weekly :) Mandy works full time, has two little ones, is in great shape, is a supporting and loving sister, owns two homes, and is married to her best friend. If she has time to blog, so should I right?! So, it was tricky deciding what to write about first. The twins are thankfully asleep, Cole is in Montessori school (8:30 to 11:30) and Jacob is flying in CA right now. Which leaves me to my computer for about an hour before time starts rushing again. My husband is a pilot and recently had training in LA, CA for nearly a month. We just didn't want to be apart that long, so we ALL went with him. The airplane ride there made me think this was a terrible decision, but all in all, it was a great trip.

When traveling with three under the age of 4, I recommend:
1) A Residence Inn with two rooms (we stayed in Manhattan Beach and I could walk many places)
2) Activities to keep your toddler busy
3) Eating in more than out
4) Planned activities for every other day

Hotel:Our hotel was just right. We did have two rooms, and one was upstairs, so for a makeshift gate, we used a cardboard box. It worked great! It's too slippery for the babies to climb over, just lay it flat on the steps and wedged up on the sides. I did order two eating chairs that were delivered to the hotel - but word of note - if you attach them to your carseats, the airlines will accept them as "baby gear" usually.

Fun: We made several outings, including the beach, indoor play areas, playgrounds on pretty days, Target every other day, gardens, a museum, zoo, and an observatory. I brought some things for Cole to work on during morning naps. One is a sorting activity. I cut out color circles and put them in a muffin tin. He used tweezers to place pom poms in their matched color spot. But when he got bored of the pom poms, he sorted his tiny Squinky toys (his idea).

Was the trip difficult - absolutely. Were there challenges - yes. Was I tired - unbelievably. Would I do it again - no doubt :) We had a great time and were blessed with the opportunity to go.

Amazing Places #6 - Smith Cottage in Lake Leelanau

This amazing place is special indeed. Probably the most special place to me ever.

The Smith Family cottage up in Lake Leelanau Michigan.

"Home" for me in many ways since it is the only place we have been going to since I was a baby and will continue going to forever I hope. Frank proposed to me here in 2003 and we were married here in 2004. My parents met up here as kids. That's how special this place is.
Over a hundred years ago (I must ask my dad the exact date), the Smith cottage was built by my great grandfather. He was a chemist from Chicago who found the most perfect vacation spot in the world and bought some land and built this little cabin. It started out small, and they just kept adding on and on. Reminds me of a cardhouse a wee bit. My great grandmother was an amazing artist who painted all the rooms with quotes/silhouettes/and animals. I think that is a big part of what makes the cottage so unique. Her favorite color was periwinkle so all the shutters are a wonderful periwinkle. Now it is my favorite color (I had to use it for our wedding).

The busts/pottery were all made by the family as well. The house is a bit creepy at times. Especially at night. It creaks and moans on windy nights and the shadows/drawings always make me feel like my great grandpa is there watching us. The whole cabin is a bit dark because the house is surrounded by cedar and birches and made of dark cedar wood. We've never cut them away because it just wouldn't be right to.  That's my great grandpa's silhouette above. Mmmm. I can just smell the cedar, fresh flowers, and fresh lake breeze right now.

The cheeriest room of the house is definitely the kitchen painted in sunshine yellow and full or roosters and cherries (my mom's favorites).

Mom has done a lot to cheer up this place and make it so livable and warm over the years (reupholstering furniture, curtains, bedspreads, flowers everywhere etc). Like this antique sofa below. It was a dark green velvet before and you could barely even see it in the room against the dark grain wood.

Another favorite part of this home to me are the handles on all the cupboards and hidden closets and passageways throughout the house. No two handles are the same. Sometimes you even pull strings for doors or turn wood sticks to hold the door closed. Really intriguing when you're a little kid. Well, what am I saying. I STILL love the handles and get excited showing them to visitors.

The hallway is more like an enclosed bridge made of three long boards that you can jump on and they wobble up and down and are quite loud. Not so great a night, but sure fun in the day. This is the "maid's room". I don't think my grandparents even had a maid, but that's what we call this teeny little room.

An old Indian trail went straight through the breezeway of the cabin in the old days. Still does, but not used by Indians anymore. The Indians would come and sell/trade their hand made crafts, many of which are still hanging in the house like these snow shoes.

Even the old dirt floored boathouse is pretty special with all kinds of antique tools floating around and wood. I always want to spend some time down there working on projects, but get lured away by the lake a few steps out the door.

We tend to spend a lot of time out on the dock or on the deck my dad helped build. Don't you just love how they left the trees in the deck? I do. Every other year or so, my dad has to widen the holes around the trees as they age.

The location of the cabin is also just perfect. Lake Leelanau happens to be one of the most beautiful places on the face of this earth... Well in my opinion at least, and I've been to a lot of places. Think rolling hills, cherry orchards, vineyards, pristine sandy beaches, national dunes/parks, crystal clear lakes, adorable fishing villages and touristy towns and completely lacking franchises.

Oh goodness. Sure wish it was summer and that I was here with my whole family. Looking forward to spending summers here with my kids and passing the traditions down. Our little piece of heaven on earth.
